Position Details
Context
The Department of Transportation and Works is responsible for the administration, supervision, control, regulation, management and direction of all matters relating to transportation and public works. As such, the department oversees the construction and maintenance of the provincial highways; the provision of the provincial ferry services; management of the provincial government fleet of light vehicles and heavy equipment; operation and maintenance of the provincial government air ambulances and water bombers; and construction and management of provincial government buildings. The vision of the Department of Transportation and Works is of safe, reliable and sustainable transportation and public works infrastructure and services, demonstrating a commitment to service excellence in supporting the social and economic needs of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Duties
This position requires the safe performance of on-shore duties in relation to the operation of a ferry. The successful candidate will be responsible for receiving and releasing tie-up lines during arrivals and departures of vessel; loading and unloading freight, mail and other materials and supplies and deposits in appropriate storage on vessel or at ferry headquarters; performing a variety of janitorial and cleaning functions as required on on-shore facilities and on the vessel; cleans washrooms and waiting areas; performing a variety of minor maintenance duties around on-shore facilities including removal of snow and ice and other debris from walkway areas around on-shore facilities; collecting fares and issues tickets to passengers at ticket booths in advance of boarding the ferry; depositing fares collected and accompanying records with Purser/Deckhand onboard vessel; dealing with the public, sometimes in confrontational and stressful circumstances; occasionally operates light duty vehicles when purchasing and delivering supplies and answering telephone enquiries during absence of Ferry Services Manager; other related duties as assigned.

Experience in marine related operations including safe rope handling.
Experience in janitorial and caretaker duties.
Experience in security of property.
Completion of high school. Equivalencies will be considered.
Valid Class 05 Driver’s License.
Valid First Aid Certificate including AED training.
WHMIS Certificate.
ROC-Marine Commercial Certificate (asset).
Completion of Passenger Safety Management Course (asset).

Conditions of Acceptance
Applicants are advised that positions will be of variable duration and terminate on or before March 31, 2019, subject to possibility of extension.
These positions are short term, casual call-in.
Participation in any safety course training, as offered and required by the Department.
Lifting or moving objects over 50 lbs such as freight, mail and other materials and supplies occurs on an occasional basis and standing for prolonged periods in the performance of daily activities. Walking, driving and climbing is performed on a regular basis is a requirement of this position, sometimes in adverse weather conditions.
